Davis Riley left Muirfield Village Golf Course Thursday with a lead.

The American golfer and Alabama graduate stormed back, using four birdies on the front nine to finish the first round of the 2023 Memorial Tournament 5-under par.

As Thursday closed, Riley sat ahead of Matt Wallace, who spent most of his first round either tied for or the outright leader, Jordan Spieth, who sits tied for third after four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey, and Rory McIlroy, who was at 3-under par heading into the 18th hole before he triple-bogeyed leaving him even after 18 holes and tied for 31st.

After his tee shot on the 17th hole, Dufner's driver snapped after hitting the ball 294 feet. It was the first of four shots to secure a par on the hole. With a new driver, Dufner started his 18th round with a 279-yard hit to the intermediate rough.

Dufner finished the first round 4-over par with a 76.

Thomas Detry storms back with an eagle

Thomas Detry did not have a strong start to the first round of the Memorial Tournament.

The former Illinois golfer started 3-over par after the first two holes before three pars and a birdie brought him back to 2-over.

On the seventh hole, Detry made himself even, recording an eagle — the sixth overall of the tournament —on a 46-foot putt. Detry is currently tied for 39th through eight holes.

Two-time winner Patrick Cantlay (2019, 2021) and Billy Horschel (2022) have each started their first rounds of the 2023 Memorial Tournament.

Horschel finished the 2022 tournament 13 strokes under par, including a combined 11 strokes under par in the second and third rounds of the tournament to separate himself for the Memorial win. He was one of 31 participants to finish at par or better in the 2022 tournament.

Cantlay's scoring average at the Memorial sits at 70.19 — better than any golfer that has played at least 10 rounds at the tournament.

A former Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year is making his presence felt at the 2023 Memorial Tournament.

Former Stanford golfer Patrick Rodgers won the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award in 2014 as the top player in Division I. And in his eighth appearance in the Memorial Tournament, Rodgers is near the top of the leaderboard.

After the first round, Rodgers is tied for seventh place with golfers like Jon Rahm and Justin Suh, shooting 2 under par through the first 18 holes.

Rodgers' best finish in the Memorial was in 2018 when he was tied for eighth place.

Danny Willett was one of the first golfers to complete their first round, leaving Muirfield Village Golf Club three strokes under par.

After his first-round performance, Willett said the course was playing well, even with the hot temperatures and the dry course.

"Especially this morning you could still, if you were in the fairway, you could still stop it the quite nicely with a mid iron," Willett said, who was a part of the first group that took the course at 7 a.m. "And you could spin back a wedge if you caught it real good. Most of that is due to the slopes around the flags. Really fair. You hit good shots you can make birdie. You hit bad shots and you're really struggling to kind of make par. So I assume, as every year when we come back to Jack's (Nicklaus) place, that it just kind of gets progressively tougher as the week goes on."

Mark Hubbard takes top spot during 2023 Memorial first round

Mark Hubbard is at the top of the Memorial Tournament leaderboard 14 holes into his first round.

Back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 brought Hubbard in front of Matt Wallace for the tournament lead at 6-under.

Through 14 holes, Hubbard has seven birdies, six pars and a bogey.

Dylan Frittelli withdraws from Memorial Tournament

After six straight holes recording at least a bogey, Dylan Frittelli has withdrawn from the Memorial Tournament.

Starting even through the first three holes of the first round, Fritelli finished with nine bogeys, including double-bogeys on holes 9, 12 and 14, and triple-bogeys on holes 10 and 8.

Frittelli had played in two previous Memorial Tournaments, placing 22nd in 2020.

Matt Wallace relinquishes lead after missed putt

Leading the field at 5-under par coming into the 12th hole, by the time Matt Wallace teed off on hole No. 13, his lead was gone.

Wallace missed a putt from just under eight feet on par, tapping it in from two feet for a bogey.

As a result, Wallace is tied with Danny Willett and Keith Wallace at the top of the leaderboard.

Scottie Scheffler bogeys to start front nine

Coming into the 2023 Memorial Tournament as the No. 1 golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler had a consistent start, finishing even through the back nine holes with a birdie on the 11th hole and a bogey on the 16th hole.

To start the second half of his first round, Scheffler bogeyed the second hole at Muirfield Village. He's +1 through 11 holes, tied for 32nd with golfers like Jason Day and Emiliano Grillo.

Dylan Frittelli struggles mightily in first round of Memorial Tournament

Dylan Frittelli's third trip to the Memorial has not gone as planned.

After finishing even through the first three holes, Frittelli bogeyed the fourth and fifth holes, birdied the sixth and and bogeyed the seventh before hitting par on the eighth hole.

The ninth hole is when Frittelli's day went off the rails.

Frittelli double-bogeyed or triple-bogeyed each of the next four holes, coming into his 13th hole with a +12.

In 2020, Fritteli finished tied for 22nd in the Memorial. He missed the cut in 2021.

Through six holes, Lowry has five birdies, while Wallace finished the first half of the first round at 5-under, finishing the ninth hole with in three strokes.

The reigning Masters Tournament champion and 2020 Memorial Tournament winner is even through seven holes.

Jon Rahm, ranked as the No. 2 golfer in the world, has scored par on each of the first seven holes he's played in the first round of the Memorial Tournament.

On the eighth hole, he birdied, moving up the leaderboard tied for 17th place with golfers including Viktor Hovland, Adam Scott and Cameron Young.

Day, an Australian, came into the Memorial as the No. 22 golfer in the world, finishing in the top 10 seven times during 2022-23.

Day will take the course along with reigning Masters Tournament and former Memorial champion Jon Rahm — the No. 2 golfer in the world, and Collin Morikawa, who is ranked at No. 18.

Scottie Scheffler takes course at 2023 Memorial Tournament

The No. 1 golfer in the world has started his first round at the 2023 Memorial Tournament.

Coming off a third-place finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Scottie Scheffler took the course Thursday morning along with Emiliano Grillo and Viktor Hovland. Scheffler won The Players Championship March 12, finishing 17 strokes under par.

Grillo is ranked as the No. 42 golfer in the world, while Hovland is at No. 7: one of seven top-10 golfers participating in the 2023 Memorial.

Denny McCarthy is the first golfer under par at Memorial Tournament

The Memorial has its first leader.

After eight golfers began the first round even, including Danny Willett and Peter Malnati through the first two holes, American golfer Denny McCarthy began his day with a birdie on the 10th hole.

McCarthy is ranked 47th in the FedEx Cup standings and has three top-10 wins in 2022-23.

2023 Memorial Tournament betting favorites 

While Billy Horschel looks to secure his second straight Memorial Tournament title, he is not the favorite heading into the 2023 tournament.

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world according to the Official World Golf Ranking, is the favorite to win the 2023 Memorial Tournament at +650, while Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters Tournament champion and No. 2 golfer in the world, has +750 odds.

Scheffler (-140) and Rahm (-115) are each heavy favorites to finish in the top 10, while Patrick Cantlay (+115), Xander Schauffele (+140), Rory McIlroy (+150), and Viktor Hovland (+200) all have +200 odds or better to finish in the top 10 spots.

Horschel has +18000 odds to repeat as champion, while Westerville resident Jason Day comes in with +2500 odds to win the Memorial.

2023 Memorial Tournament weather: Sunny skies ahead for first round

The 2023 Memorial Tournament will begin under sunny skies Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, the weather in Dublin for the first round of the Memorial Thursday will be sunny with a high near 89. There will also be a southeast wind around 5 mph that becomes calm in the evening.

Friday and Saturday are expected to bring more sun with highs near 91, while Sunday will be sunny with a high near 84 during the final round of the tournament.

Here’s what happened during the 2022 Memorial Tournament 

Billy Horschel will take the course at Muirfield Village Golf Club trying to repeat as Memorial champion.

After finishing the first round of the 2022 tournament 2 strokes under par, Horschel finished the next two rounds 11 strokes under par, finishing the tournament 4 strokes better than Aaron Wise for his first Memorial championship with a 275. Horschel secured more than $2 million of the $12 million purse with the 2022 Memorial Tournament title.

Patrick Cantlay, who won the Memorial in 2019 and 2021, finished tied for third place with Joaquin Niemann with a 281, while 2020 Memorial champion Jon Rahm finished tied for 10th place with Sungjae Im and Brendan Steele with a 284.
