1st and 3rd quarters power Winona State to win over Beavers

Feb. 23—WINONA — The Winona State women's basketball team took control against Bemidji State in quarters one and three on Friday night in Winona.

The Warriors led the Beavers 24-16 after the opening frame, and when the Beavers responded in the second quarter, WSU charged ahead again in the third. That was enough to secure a 75-64 win.

BSU (6-19, 3-18 NSIC) closed the gap to just three points at the half, trailing 41-38. But Winona State's eight-point advantage in the third quarter gave the Warriors (9-17, 8-13 NSIC) breathing room heading into the final period, and WSU secured the win with an even showing in the fourth.

Four players scored in double figures for Bemidji State, led by Alyssa Hill with 18. Seniors Isabel Majewski, Sam Pogatchnik and Amme Sheforgen all managed 10 points in their second-to-last game in a BSU uniform.

Emma Carpenter led Winona State with 21 points, supplemented by Ava Sergio's 13 and Olivia Gamoke's 12. Mattie Schimenz also reached double figures for the Warriors with 10 points.
