Padres P Torres on restricted list as domestic violence case looms
The San Diego Padres have placed left-handed reliever Jose Torres on Major League Baseball's restricted list as he faces charges stemming from a domestic violence incident in December.
Torres was arrested following a dispute at his home in Phoenix in which he allegedly brandished a semiautomatic handgun and pointed it at his victim, knocked a door off its hinges and punched a hole in another door, according to a report from the San Diego Union-Tribune. Torres was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage and making threats or intimidation.
His next court appearance is a pretrial conference set to take place Feb. 20.
Torres was placed on MLB's restricted list Monday, and the Padres released the following statement Tuesday:
"We are aware of the allegations involving Jose Torres, and he will not be reporting to spring training. We take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with the investigation being conducted by the Commissioner's Office. We will not have any further comment at this time."
Torres, 24, appeared in 62 games as a rookie for San Diego in 2017, posting a 4.21 ERA in 68 1/3 innings. Manager Andy Green told reporters that the southpaw would have been competing for a spot on the team during spring training.
"He threw the ball well for us last year and did some things to fight his way into bullpen contention," Green said, per the Union-Tribune. "He wasn't coming into camp with a guaranteed spot by any stretch. There were going to be guys competing for those spots, and we still have a pretty healthy contingent of left-handed pitchers."
