William & Mary 72, Rutgers 62
Junior guard Marcus Thornton led all scorers with 28 points and the William & Mary Tribe rode a fantastic start to the second half to a 72-62 win at Rutgers over the Scarlet Knights on Saturday.
The Tribe (2-3) trailed 33-24 at halftime but came roaring out of the break to score 20 unanswered points to open the second period. Five players contributed to the game-changing run, which allowed William & Mary to build a 44-33 lead.
Rutgers (3-3) didn't score in the second half until the 13:04 mark of the stanza and trailed by eight or more points the rest of the way. The Scarlet Knights mustered just five points in the first 12 minutes of the frame.
Thornton, who earlier this week scored his 1,000th career point and became the fifth-fastest William & Mary player to reach the milestone, finished just shy of his single-game career high of 32 points. Guard Terry Tarpey added 11 points, including a huge dunk that punctuated William & Mary's 20-0 run. Forward Tim Rusthoven contributed 10 points and swingman Omar Prewitt had nine points.
The Tribe made 14 of their 24 field-goal attempts (58.3 percent) in the second half. They shot 46 percent for the game, and also outrebounded the Scarlet Knights by a 35-32 margin.
Guard Jerome Seagears led Rutgers with 15 points. Forward Kadeem Jack and guard Myles Mack added 14 each. The Knights also struggled with their composure, getting assessed three technical fouls. As a team, Rutgers made 10 3-pointers.
