Wales, remarkably, is on to the semifinals of Euro 2016 after upsetting Belgium 3-1 in Friday’s quarterfinal. The Welsh did so with a stunning goal from the unlikeliest of sources, a second-division-player-turned-free-agent.

But the real upset story here is the ongoing disco exploits of Joe Ledley. Here he is in the locker room after the victory over the Belgians.

At first glance, Ledley looks less like a soccer player and more like a lumberjack. At the very least, his full, grizzly, protruding beard and sunken face give him a scruffy look befitting of a man who doles out crunching tackles — and not catchy jigs — with regularity.

What makes Ledley’s dance moves even more extraordinary? That he broke his leg less than two months ago.

To understand how the Welshman has endured though a fractured fibula, we must chronicle his rise as a dancer from beginning to present.

Like many rags-to-riches stories, this one came from humble beginnings. Back on Oct. 10, 2015, Wales actually lost 2-0 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in its penultimate Euro 2016 qualifier. But thanks to Israel’s 2-1 loss to Cyprus, the Welsh booked their ticket to their first European Championships ever. That called for a celebration.

But a measured one. Because this was not a victory, and it was on the road.

The real party took place three days later. Wales beat Andorra on home soil to put an exclamation point on a successful qualification campaign, and Ledley’s teammates gave him the platform he needed:

Heading into Euro 2016, Ledley issued a warning to all his rhythmic doubters. “It’s just instinct,” he said. “I’ve got a few moves in my locker. That was just one of many.”

Then, as Wales paraded around the pitch following a 3-0 win over Russia in the group stage, Ledley went mainstream — in part because he added to his repertoire:

And finally, he peaked in the locker room after a Round of 16 win over Northern Ireland.

After the quarterfinal win, Ledley combined his on-field routine with the locker room one.

How can you not root for Ledley as he dances his way into the semifinals?
