Veteran D Hamrlik joins Rangers
The New York Rangers added a defenseman to their roster Wednesday, claiming veteran Roman Hamrlik off waivers from the Washington Capitals.
The Capitals placed the 38-year-old Hamrlik on waivers Tuesday. He had seen limited action this season, posting one assist in four games.
The move could be a costly one for the Rangers. They will take a $3.5 million salary-cap hit by adding Hamrlik, who is in the final year of a two-year contract.
Hamrlik is a likely replacement on the roster for defenseman Marc Staal, who was hit in the right eye by a deflected puck during Tuesday's game against Philadelphia. It's not known how long Staal will be out.
Hamrlik began his NHL career with the Lightning in 1992. His stops include Edmonton, the New York Islanders, Calgary, Montreal and Washington. He has 155 goals, 483 assists and 1,402 penalty minutes.
