Umenyiora agrees to restructured deal
New York Giants' two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora agreed to a restructured contract, the team announced on Friday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Umenyiora has not participated in the team's drills this spring, but he said he would return on Monday.
"I'm just happy, I'm happy all that's over with," Umenyiora said. "It's time to get back to work."
Umenyiora and the Giants have had discussions regarding his contract since the end of last year's lockout.
"This gives me peace of mind, definitely," Umenyiora said. "We just resolved a situation. It really was affecting me in a bad way. Because I didn't like all the negativity that was surrounding the whole situation. I couldn't stand it, because if you know me, you know I'm not that type of person. I'm just happy all that is over with and I'll be there. I'll play out this contract, I'll play this year and I'll play my heart out."
General manager Jerry Reese said he is happy to have Umenyiora back.
"I appreciate Osi's patience and effort through this process," general manager Jerry Reese said. "We talked it out, and it makes sense for everybody involved. We are very pleased, excited and looking forward to seeing number 72 on the field at Monday's OTA."
Umenyiora, 30, was a Pro Bowler in 2005 and 2007 and is entering his 10th NFL season. David Diehl and Umenyiora are the longest-tenured members of the team.
Umenyiora has 69.0 career regular season sacks, fourth on the Giants all-time list.
Umenyiora was entering the final year of a seven-year extension that would have paid him a base salary of $3.975 million.
