Trevor Siemian is being targeted by the Buffalo Bills
One of the more shocking quarterback battles last season took place in the home of the then defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos. Following the retirement of star player and future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, the Broncos were left to pick up the pieces and find a new starting quarterback for their team in 2016.
Spending a first round pick on Memphis signal caller Paxton Lynch, the Broncos also brought in former Jets starter Mark Sanchez to fight for the starting job. It looked to be a two horse race between a potentially good quarterback in Lynch and a never was in Sanchez. Straightforward is what many experts believed would be the quarterback battle.

Then, out of nowhere, in steps Trevor Siemian. Playing his college career out at Northwestern, Siemian was the final quarterback taken during the 2015 NFL Draft. The third stringer behind both Manning and Brock Osweiler, Siemian was a nobody who was not expected to challenge for a starting role, but to challenge for a roster spot in general.
Earning the starting job, Siemian was a player who I would call average at best. The biggest reason I could come up with for why he became the starter is due to the lack of experience for Paxton Lynch and the below average past of Mark Sanchez. Starting 14 games for Denver last season, Siemian was a capable player, but never really had the breakout that many believed he would eventually have.
Now a free agent this offseason, Trevor Siemian is one of the few starter/backup quality quarterbacks available in free agency. Considering the Buffalo Bills past history, I guess it should come as no shock that the team is interested in such a player for their starting quarterback job next season.
Throwing for 3,401 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, Trevor Siemian strikes me as a pure downgrade from current starter Tyrod Taylor. That said, signing Siemian could be just what the Bills need to do, especially if they believe 2017 will be a reconstruction year for the team.
While the pieces exist on the roster, the team still needs some help at key positions. While Tyrod Taylor is a talented duel-threat quarterback, he isn’t someone that will take this team to the promised land. Seeing as any rookie pickups will need at least a season to develop, the Bills could use Siemian as a stop gap option for this season while the rookie begins his development.
Add into such a scenario that Siemian would likely come in on a cheaper and shorter contract and the Buffalo Bills may be on the right track with signing him. However, if the team believes that he is the next big thing, they are sorely mistaken. Hopefully, the team’s decision will be based off the rebuilding idea and not the golden boy fantasy.
