What do Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin have in common? Well, the head coach and quarterback both won a Super Bowl in their second respective seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Not only did the pair start success early on in their careers, the pair was also young up-and-comers in their respected positions.

Roethlisberger went from being the number three choice to starting quarterback in the first six weeks of his career. Tomlin was essentially a head coaching choice that came out of nowhere as he took the reigns of one of the most storied franchises in the NFL at age 34.

For the last ten years, this pair has been great to watch.

USA Today’s site For the Win recently had an article that ranked the best coach-quarterback tandems in the NFL. Roethlisberger and Tomlin cracked the top-five at number five on that list.

From the article:

“Tomlin and Roethlisberger form one of five Super Bowl-winning tandems on this list. With Tomlin being a defensive coach, there may not be a lot of collaboration between these two but they make a perfect pair. Neither one is afraid to take a chance at anytime.”

This is what has made the Steelers so fun to watch since the pair began in 2007. Both Tomlin and Roethlisberger are willing to take chances during the critical parts of the game.

As a fan, it can be completely unnerving when the Steelers take a chance. For example, when the team could have tied it up against the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football but went for the win instead, I almost couldn’t watch.

In this instance, it was the trust that the two had in each other to make the right call that made the difference. Because these two trusted each other, the team turned that trust into confidence and the resulting play was six points and a win.

Trust isn’t the only thing that has given Tomlin and Roethlisberger success. The biggest relationship with any head coach is the one he has with his quarterback and these two have an eerie unspoken communication. During games they can already tell what the other is thinking and that usually leads to a well-balanced offensive attack.

Tomlin and Roethlisberger’s success will continue in 2016 with the team keeping an eye on the Lombardi trophy and the “Stairway to Seven” motto. I think this head coach-quarterback duo is better than five in the NFL and they will prove it by heading to Houston, Texas come February.
