Tigers place RHP Sanchez, C Avila on DL

The Detroit Tigers placed right-handed starter Anibal Sanchez and catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Sanchez, who has a shoulder strain in his throwing arm, is 6-5 with a 2.76 ERA.

Avila was injured Sunday when he was hit on his left forearm by a pitch.

The club recalled outfielder Avisail Garcia and catcher Bryan Holaday from Class AAA Toledo.

Sanchez's spot in the rotation will be taken by Jose Alvarez, perhaps for two starts.
