Three-hit game gives Cabrera an S.F.-record 50 hits in May

For the San Francisco Giants, the month of May used to belong to Mays. Now it belongs to Melky.

Melky Cabrera had three more hits Tuesday in the Giants' 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks, giving him 50 for the month, the most ever by a San Francisco player. Willie Mays had 49 in May 1958.

The San Francisco record for any month belongs to Randy Winn, who had 51 hits in September 2005.

"Any time you're in a category with Willie Mays, there's something to be said about that," pitcher Ryan Vogelsong said. "I'd like to see him get a couple more (Wednesday) and see him up there by himself."

Don't put it past Cabrera, the majors' leader in hits (77) and multiple-hit games (25).

When it comes to goals, he shoots for the moon.

Here's what he said when the subject turned to Mays (Cabrera was told before the game by a coach that he was closing in on the record): "I wasn't aware of it. I'm very happy I was able to equal a record by Willie Mays, and maybe one day I can be like Willie Mays myself."

Say Hey Kid, meet the Melk Man.
