Texas' Kabongo has supension reduced to 23 games

Texas guard Myck Kabongo had his punishment reduced and will now have to sit out only 23 games for accepting impermissible benefits and giving false statements to investigators, the NCAA announced Friday.

The NCAA originally had ruled Kabongo ineligible for the season, but the sanction was reduced after Txas appealed the decision.

The suspension includes 11 games Kabongo already has missed this season, so he would be eligible to return Feb. 13 against Iowa State. He would be eligible for the final eight games of the regular season, plus the Big 12 tournament and any postseason play.

Kabongo started 33 games last season as a freshman, and was named to the five-player preseason all-Big 12 team prior to this season.

Kabongo must also repay $475 for the benefits he received.
