Hanrahan to DL; Tazawa to close for Red Sox

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell plans to use Junichi Tazawa in the ninth inning after a forearm injury landed Joel Hanrahan back on the 15-day disabled list.

Koji Uehara could get chances in the ninth inning, but Farrell said he'd prefer to leave the right-hander in the eighth-inning setup role. Tazawa had 18 strikeouts and three walks in 14 1/3 innings this season.

Right-handed starter Allen Webster replaced Hanrahan on the 25-man roster Tuesday. Webster made his major league debut in the second game of a doubleheader April 21. He is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA for Pawtucket with 26 strikeouts and six walks. Opponents batted .171 against Webster.

Hanrahan, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the offseason, suffered a strained right forearm and needs a second stint on the disabled list in the first month of the 2013 season. He had to leave Monday's game had an MRI exam Tuesday.

Hanrahan's injury comes at the worst time for the Red Sox, who had to put reliever Andrew Bailey, the team's other closer, on the disabled list Monday.
