Varejao, 33, had been deciding between offers from the Warriors and San Antonio Spurs and made his final choice on Sunday night. Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton played the most critical role in luring Varejao, along with the team's championship aspirations and Varejao's friendship with guard Leandro Barbosa.

Varejao was traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deadline day deal. He spent his first 11-plus NBA seasons with the Cavaliers, averaging 7.6 points and 7.5 rebounds in 590 career games and playing a major role in multiple championship-contending runs.

Varejao will give the Warriors depth in the front court. Golden State lost Festus Ezeli to a knee injury and will waive forward Jason Thompson to create roster space for Varejao, sources said.
