A smidge of Titans news

The Titans replaced backup guard/center Brian Schwenkle with Tim Lelito, formerly of the Saints. I only recall one game for Lelito. The Saints starting center got hurt and he came into the game. The first snap sailed over quarterback Drew Brees’ head. It was brutal, but as the game wore on, he played fine. Possibly that play was just nerves. Googling, the common sentiment seems to be that he is very effective in the run game, but could pass block better.

The interesting thing about Lelito comes from the Titans site:

“During his NFL career, Lelito has registered starts at left guard (12), right guard (4), center (3) and as an extra tight end (5). For the 2015 season with the Saints he started 13 games, including 10 at left guard.”

Five starts as the extra tight end had to be appealing to coach Mike Mularkey. Last season, he played tackle Dennis Kelly as the third tight end many times. The problem with this is that he is announced as an eligible receiver. There is zero surprise. A tight end should have the ability to catch and these linemen generally don’t. I’m not a fan of this usage, but it’s quite minimal.

As with many affordable free agents, I have yet to truly hear any reason why the Titans didn’t just re-sign their own players. Moving on….welcome Tim Lelito.
