The last time New York Giants running back Shane Vereen took the field was against the division rival Washington Redskins on Sept. 25.

Vereen gained 67 yards on 11 attempts and scored a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 28 yards and had fumble. He also tore his left triceps in the game. It is unknown when exactly the injury occurred but Vereen played most of the 29-27 Giants loss with the injury.

A day later, the Giants announced Vereen “has a triceps injury that requires season-ending surgery”. This was confirmed later in the day by a team spokesman just before head coach Ben McAdoo’s weekly teleconference.

Then, the Giants released another statement regarding Vereen’s injury with the “season-ending” part removed. There is a rule in place that allows a team to activate one player from the injured reserve list each season. The player has to remain on the list for at least six weeks before he can be activated and can return to the field after eight weeks.

The normal recovery time for Vereen’s injury is two months. On Wednesday, he returned to the practice field. The Giants are hoping that Vereen will be able to play Dec. 11 against the Dallas Cowboys, a game that could potentially decide the top spot in the NFC East.

“That would be great,” Vereen said. “Division opponent. To play against Dallas nonetheless, that would be awesome. Like I said, it’s kind of out of my hands. It’s up to the progression, up to the doctors, hopefully.”

The Giants have 21 days to activate Vereen from the injured reserve list or he truly will be lost for the season.

In spite of the Giants’ 8-3 record, the offense has been pedestrian for much of the season. Vereen’s 147 yards rushing this season still ranks second on the team despite missing the last eight games.
