The New Orleans Saints will host the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday as they try to keep alive their slim playoff hopes. Even though the Rams haven’t exactly scared most of their opponents, the Saints should remember their history and be cautious.

Back on October 30, 2011, the Saints visited the Rams (the year they went 13-3 and Drew Brees put up a historic season.) The Rams shocked the Saints with a 31-21 victory. It was a loss that would eventually cost the Saints a first-round bye, which could have paid off against the San Francisco 49ers.

The two teams met again in 2013. The Saints were in a tight race with the Carolina Panthers for the NFC South. Then the 5-8 Rams showed up, rushed for 144 yards, picked off Drew Brees twice and won the game, 27-16. The Saints needed a first-round bye but instead lost a road playoff game to Seattle. What a shame.

Even though the Rams sit at 4-6 and haven’t been able to find any consistency, they are a team capable of slowing down the Saints and giving them more troubles. Sure, their offense and Todd Gurley aren’t doing much, but anyone can move the ball and score on the Saints defense.

And second, the Rams have the NFL’s sixth-best defense according to ESPN.com, allowing just 318.3 yards and 18.7 points a game. If there’s a defense designed to give Drew Brees problems, it’s this Rams squad.

Robert Quinn and Aaron Donald can be forces in the middle of the field or at the line of scrimmage, and can easily give Brees a tough day.

The Saints need to be ready for the Rams, because this game will be anything but easy.
