Roberts' season ends not long after it began

Brian Roberts, 2012 hardly knew ye.

After just 17 games in a Baltimore Orioles uniform, Roberts said Sunday he will shut himself down and aim for a healthy 2013.

Roberts, 34, was out from May 2011 until last month after suffering his second concussion in less than a year. He returned last month and played for roughly a month before tearing the labrum in his right hip. Sunday, he opted for season-ending surgery.

Roberts, whose game is predicated upon speed and getting on base, said his legs were too important to him to rush a return.

"We kind of knew this was a possibility going in, but we wanted to give it the best possible shot we could," he said of testing the leg in a rehab setting. "It's not going to put me in a position to play the way I want to play."

Omar Quintanilla and Ryan Flaherty have shared the position of late, and Robert Andino -- who played second regularly before Roberts' return -- likely is coming off the disabled list this week.

Roberts is under contract through 2013, the final year of a four-year, $40 million extension signed in 2009.
