Report: Rangers' McDonagh could be named captain this week

The Rangers’ Ryan Callahan trade left the team without a captain, but that could change this week as camp opens up for second-year coach Alain Vigneault.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh could be named the team’s 27th captain as early as Thursday, according to The New York Daily News. McDonagh, one of the best defenseman in the league, attended the season-opening media tour along with net-minder Henrik Lundqvist – a possible hint of what’s to come later this week.

Should it happen, McDonagh said he’s more than ready to step up.

“I think I’ve progressed into being a go-to guy, someone teammates can look up to and someone they can count on,” he told the NYDN. “I think guys see I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win. … [Captain] is a big responsibility, too. It’s not just about on the ice but how you carry yourself off of it and represent the organization.”

Entering his fifth season, McDonagh’s tallied 26 goals and 77 assists in 246 games.
