Report: Quentin ruling could come before teams meet again
San Diego's Carlos Quentin could begin serving his eight-game suspension on Monday when the Padres open a series in Los Angeles with the Dodgers, according to a report.
A ruling could come as early as Sunday from Major League Baseball, which apparently is expediting Quentin's appeal of his punishment after he charged the mound Thursday night in a brawl that left Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke with a broken collarbone, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Greinke, who hit Quentin with a pitch in the seventh inning, had surgery on Saturday and will miss eight weeks.
If there is no MLB ruling before Monday's game, there's a possibility that Quentin will drop his appeal and start his suspension. There are concerns about retaliation and an escalation of the bad blood between the teams over the incident on the field.
Quentin, who is hitting .182 in the first two weeks of the season, said he's aware that MLB is reviewing his appeal during the weekend.
"I've been truthful about my situation with Greinke," he said. "I wish he would be."
Meanwhile, the Dodgers named left-hander Chris Capuano to replace Greinke in their starting rotation. The 34-year-old's first start this season could come Tuesday against the Padres.
