Report: Mother plans to take Camacho off life support

The mother of Hector "Macho" Camacho said on Friday she plans to have Camacho taken off life support on Saturday, the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia reported Friday.

Maria Matias, mother of the former boxing champion, told reporters of her decision outside the San Juan, P.R. hospital where the 50-year-old Camacho lies unconscious.

Apparently, other family members want to keep Camacho alive, however.

He was shot in the face Tuesday and has been kept alive by machines. Matias wants to wait until Saturday so his three sons can say farewell to him Saturday morning.

Another news conference is scheduled for Saturday morning at Centro Medico, the main trauma center for San Juan.

Doctors have said Camacho is clinically brain dead from a shooting in his hometown of Bayamon.

Camacho won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s.

Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.
