Report: Boston's Crawford will be out 3 months

Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford will be out of action for three months while he recovers from an injury to his left elbow, ESPNBoston.com reported Thursday.

Crawford has decided not to have surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament, and he will try to rehabilitate without an operation.

"Carl Crawford was examined by the Red Sox medical staff," the red Sox said in a statement. "He was diagnosed as having a left elbow ulnar collateral ligament sprain. A conservative treatment protocol was recommended. Carl was also examined by Dr. James Andrews who was in agreement with the assessment and plan. Carl received a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection and will be shut down from baseball activity during the initial phase of his treatment."

Crawford had surgery on his left wrist in January, causing him to be placed on the disabled list to start the season.

The soreness in his elbow began during spring training in Florida and he later had an MRI in Boston.

Crawford has yet to play for the Red Sox this season and had been participating in extended spring training as a designated hitter.

Crawford signed a seven-year, $142 million contract with the Red Sox before the 2011 season, but he hit only .255 with 11 homers last season.
