Redskins should carry three quarterbacks

The Washington Redskins should make sure to get a last, long, good look at Nate Sudfeld. Despite a less than impressive outing against the New York Jets last week, nothing in Washington makes me believe that the quarterback situation is solid after this season at that position.

It’s become pretty clear that unless Kirk Cousins has a Joe Flacco type Super Bowl year, or at least gets real close, 2017 will be “wide open spaces” at quarterback in Washington, and who knows what direction Scot McCloughan may choose to go.

I saw Sudfeld in three games last year while he was at Indiana. I wasn’t watching Indiana because I love Hoosier football. I simply caught some of those games, and remember mostly that they were competitive, and he was the reason they were.

That seems like a real long time ago when looking at him and his play against the Jets. He was given an opportunity to make an impression, and on the whole, did little initially. I would point to his own postmortem as to why he should get that extra look and consideration.

This from CSN Mid-Atlantic:

“We had run like four plays in a row and I was itching to throw the ball and I didn’t want to check it own. So juvenile, I needed to check it down, throw it to who was open. I was trying to fit it in a nice throw but when I threw it I knew I kind of forced this one.”

It’s hardly breaking news when an athlete tries to make a bigger play than he needs to. But his own self analysis points to a guy who gets it above the shoulders. Sudfeld is a big kid with a big arm. He’s also a smart guy who gets the bigger picture. Those words don’t always leave the mouth of players supposedly better at that position, as anyone inside an RGIII press conference could testify to.

It’s anyone’s guess whether Jay Gruden and the Redskins keep Nate Sudfeld. But it might be worth it when looking at what this team may want to do at quarterback after this season.

Given the Kirk Cousins situation, the Redskins seem to want to have some options open at that position.
