It sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s true: the GOAT and Megatron met up in a dance ballroom.

Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver of all time, and Calvin Johnson, the recently-retired fantastic receiver, had somehow never met before Monday night. And, of all places, they met on the set of a dance-themed reality television show.

A show that welcomed each of them as contestants.

Johnson is currently on Season 23 of “Dancing with the Stars” and is doing pretty well so far. Monday night’s theme was “Most Memorable Year”, with stars and their pro partners doing dances that reflected a noteworthy year in the star’s life.

Johnson’s chosen year was 2012, when he broke Rice’s single-season receiving yardage record, posting 1,964 with the Detroit Lions, passing the 1,848 Rice had in 1995 with the San Francisco 49ers.

At the end of Johnson’s dance with his partner, Lindsay Arnold, he’s thrown a football. In rehearsals, it came from one of the company dancers, but for the live show, it came from Rice, to the surprise of Johnson.

When Johnson realized it was Rice, the two did a jumping body bump, then shook hands and hugged.

“I turned around and see who’s throwing the ball and I’m like, ‘Where’s Alan?’ All I see is a guy in a gray suit,” Johnson said after the dance.

“Come on, man, that tight spiral, man,” Rice said.

“It was tight,” Johnson said.

“Yes, that’s what I’m saying,” Rice said.

“Easy to catch,” Johnson said.

Rice was runner up on Season 2 of the show, back in 2006.
