Press Box: Ohio State RB Hyde suspended indefinitely

Ohio State starting running back Carlos Hyde was suspended, but not dismissed from the team, as a result of an incident at a Columbus bar.

Early Monday, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Hyde had been dismissed from the team after reports that he allegedly punched a woman at a Columbus bar.

However, in a press release issued later Monday, head coach Urban Meyer announced Hyde had been indefinitely suspended from football activities.

The release also noted that further punishment and dismissal are is still possible, depending on the outcome of the student code of conduct and criminal investigations.

Hyde has not yet been charged in the incident.

Hyde rushed for 970 yards last season with a team-high 16 rushing touchdowns.

The school also acknowledged an incident involving starting cornerback Bradley Roby, an All-Big Ten selection last year who was arrested by Bloomington (Ind.) police on an assault charge over the weekend. No discipline was announced for Roby.

----Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller was named Big Ten preseason offensive player of the year in a poll organized by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Miller received 24 of 26 votes by writers who cover the conference.

--- The New Jersey Devils agreed to a one-year contract with 41-year-old veteran Jaromir Jagr. ESPN reported that the deal should be made official Tuesday.

The deal could be worth about $4 million.

Last season, Jagr had 16 goals and 19 assists in 45 games combined with the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

---Criminal charges against North Carolina leading scorer P.J. Hairston stemming from his June arrest were dismissed.

A Durham, N.C., court clerk confirmed to several media outlets that the charges were dropped.

Hairston was scheduled to have a court hearing in August after being arrest June 5 on a misdemeanor marijuana charge. He had also been charged with driving without a license, which was also dismissed.

The rental driven by Hairston was linked to Haydn "Fats" Thomas, a convicted felon who is facing a drug charge.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

---Several former Oakland University players claim that former coach Beckie Francis intimidated and mentally abused them before she was eventually fired in June, USA Today reported.

The players say that Francis scrutinized the players' weight, forced her religious beliefs on players and questioned them on their sexual activity.

Francis spent 13 seasons as the team's before being let go on June 12.

GOLF

---Final round coverage of the British Open scored a 3.6 overnight Nielsen rating on Sunday, according to Sports Business Daily.

Phil Mickelson won the event by three shots. It was the highest-rated final round since it moved to ESPN in 2010.
