Press Box: Jenkins back to Arizona, Beckham may buy MLS team
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
When he announced in December that he would transfer to Washington State, Arizona running back Daniel Jenkins said he would always be a Wildcat at heart. Now, Jenkins has had a change of heart.
Five months after saying he would play his final year for the Cougars, Jenkins has decided to transfer again --back to Arizona.
Because he graduated, Jenkins would have been eligible to play immediately for the Cougars. He participated in Washington State's spring drills and was expected to be a vital cog in the Cougars' offense.
After making the announcement Friday that Jenkins would rejoin the team, Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez told TucsonCitizen.com, "It's a long story."
In 2012, Jenkins rushed for 293 yards and two touchdowns as a backup to the nation's leading rusher, Ka'Deem Carey.
SOCCER
David Beckham's retirement plans could include owning an MLS team.
Beckham, who announced his retirement Thursday, may return to the U.S. to buy an expansion team or take over a team moving to a new location, according to Fox Sports.
Beckham's contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy included an option for him to buy an expansion team, and his advisers have reportedly been in talks with the MLS about locations for a new team.
The league is looking to add a 20th team in New York. However, Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour is likely to buy it.
Also, Beckham's option to buy a team reportedly does not include New York.
HOCKEY
Switzerland shut out the United States 3-0 in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Stockholm and will play for the gold medal of the tournament.
The Swiss will play for the gold for the first time since 1953. They will play Sweden on Sunday.
Team USA will take on Finland in the bronze medal game, also Sunday.
New York Islanders prospect Nino Niederreiter, Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi and Reto Suri each scored for Switzerland.
Calgary Flames prospect Reto Berra had 29 saves in goal.
Sweden beat Finland 3-0 Saturday in the other semifinal. Dallas Stars forward Loui Eriksson scored twice and former Hart Trophy winner Henrik Sedin had a goal for the Swedes.
OLYMPICS
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told Sports Illustrated he may stay on as coach of USA Basketball.
He said last year that he would no longer coach the team but now he is thinking about remaining with the team through the 2016 Olympics. Krzyzewski has not made a final decision and has discussed the subject with USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo.
Krzyzewski has insisted that he would step down since winning the gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics and as recently as February has reiterated that he will not return.
The team will compete in the 2014 World Championships in Madrid, before preparing for the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.
Krzyzewski took over as coach in 2005 and has gone 62-1, including Olympic gold medals in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. The team also won gold in the 2010 World Championships in Istanbul and bronze at the 2006 World Championships in Japan. The loss came to Greece in that tournament.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Former Baylor women's basketball star Brittney Griner told ESPN the Magazine that coach Kim Mulkey told players not to openly discuss their sexuality because it would hurt the school's image.
Griner, who was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury, recently revealed that she is gay.
Griner's friends and family knew about her sexual orientation, but she remained silent about it at Baylor because coaches requested it. However, she said everyone at Baylor knew she was gay when she was a freshman.
"I told Coach (Mulkey) when she was recruiting me," Griner said. "I was like, 'I'm gay. I hope that's not a problem,' and she told me that it wasn't. I mean, my teammates knew, obviously they all knew. Everybody knew about it."
Baylor University is a private Baptist school in Waco, Texas. It has a "Statement on Human Sexuality" in its student handbook that discourages homosexuality.
The school encourages that students grappling with sexual issues to seek out counseling or consult with the school's Spiritual Life Office.
Griner was named Big 12 Player of the Year three times and led Baylor to the 2012 NCAA championship, including a 40-0 record.
