Pirates acquire Byrd, Buck from Mets

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and catcher John Buck from the New York Mets.

The Mets received infield prospect Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later.

Byrd, 35, is batting .285 with a career-high 21 home runs and will provide immediate help for the Pirates with left fielder and leadoff man Starling Marte on the disabled list with a hand injury.

Buck, 33, has 15 home runs and 60 RBIs this season and is expected to serve as Russell Martin's backup in Pittsburgh.

Herrera, 19, is batting .265 with 11 homers at Class A West Virginia this season and participated in the All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field in July.

Pittsburgh (76-54) began Monday a half-game behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central, but nine-games ahead of Arizona for the second wild card spot.
