Padres' middle-infield questions still unanswered

The Padres middle infield situation is getting murkier.

It was just last Thursday that shortstop Jason Bartlett and second baseman Orlando Hudson were replaced by shortstop Everth Cabrera and second baseman Alexi Amarista.

But things haven't improved appreciably since that move was made May 17 and it's worth keeping an eye on Class AAA Tucson where Logan Forsythe is leading off as the shortstop and Jedd Gyorko is hitting in the No. 2 slot as the second baseman.

Footnote: Beamer Weems is the very best defensive shortstop in the Padres organization. He played third base Tuesday so that Forsythe could hone his skills at short.

Forsythe, who is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list June 4, is hitting .345 in his rehab assignment with Tucson. Gyorko has homers in each of the past two games and is hitting .305 in the week he has been promoted from Class AA San Antonio.

With the Padres thus far, Cabrera is 2-for-21 as a hitter and Tuesday failed to turn an easy grounder into an inning-ending double play, allowing the Cardinals to score an added run. Amarista is 4-for-23 at the plate with the Padres.
