Orioles 4, White Sox 3 (10)
BALTIMORE -- Matt Wieters singled home two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
With one out in the 10th, pinch hitter Henry Urrutia and Nick Markakis singled off Addison Reed (5-3) to put runners on first and third for Nate McLouth. With the count 3-2, McLouth struck out while Markakis took second.
Wieters followed with a single to right field, scoring pinch runner Chris Dickerson with the tying run and Markakis with the winner.
Pinch hitter Conor Gillaspie hit a solo homer with one out in the 10th inning to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead.
Brian Roberts homered and Danny Valencia had three hits for Baltimore (76-65), which began the day tied with Cleveland, two games behind Tampa Bay for the final AL wild card spot.
Dayan Viciedo hit a homer and a double for the White Sox (56-85), who lost their ninth straight.
Tommy Hunter (4-3) pitched the 10th inning for the Orioles.
The Orioles won despite going 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position and stranding 12 base runners.
The Orioles had an opportunity in the eighth when Valencia led off with a double. Pinch runner Alexi Casilla went to third on an error with one out, but reliever Nate Jones struck out pinch hitter Wieters and got Roberts on a grounder to keep it tied.
Coming off two starts in which he didn't make it past the fourth inning, Wei-Yin Chen pitched the first six for Baltimore, giving up two runs on six hits. Chen didn't walk a batter while striking out eight in a 99-pitch effort.
White Sox starter Hector Santiago, coming off a poor outing of his own against Boston, allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings.
The Orioles jumped out front in the first. Manny Machado singled with one out and came all the way around when Chris Davis lashed a two-out opposite-field double to left center. It was Davis' league-leading 87th extra-base hit.
Chicago tied it in the fourth and snapped an 18-inning scoreless streak in the process. With one out, Alexi Ramirez hit a long fly that landed just fair in right for a double and Paul Konerko followed with an RBI single.
Chicago's Viciedo broke a 1-1 tie leading off the fifth when he golfed a low fastball from Chen to straight-away center for his 12th home run.
The lead was short-lived as Roberts hit Santiago's first pitch of the fifth inning over the wall in left to make it 2-2.
Machado followed with a double and Adam Jones bunted for a single to put runners on first and third with no outs. But Davis and J.J. Hardy popped to short and Valencia grounded out.
NOTES: Chicago bullpen coach Bobby Thigpen handled pitching coach Don Cooper's duties for the second straight game. Cooper began experiencing symptoms related to diverticulitis Friday and went to the hospital for examination Saturday. ... Wieters was given a day off from starting, with C Chris Snyder making his first start since joining the club Sept. 1. ... RHP Andre Rienzo (1-1, 5.03) opposes Bud Norris (10-10, 4.01) in Sunday's series finale.
