Right now Ravens winning Stanley vs. Tunsil debate

The Stanley vs. Tunsil question was one of the major questions of the 2016 NFL Draft. Both tackles were top prospects and there wasn’t a single mock draft that didn’t have either of them making it past the Baltimore Ravens at spot number six. The question that was on everyone’s mind was which of these highly touted tackles should be picked first: Laremy Tunsil, who has incredible athleticism and a high ceiling, but is also very raw and had some trouble with injuries, or Ronnie Stanley, the safer and more pro-ready prospect who didn’t have the injury issues, but also had a slightly lower ceiling than Tunsil.

The Ravens would end up taking Stanley with the sixth overall pick and Tunsil would fall into the Dolphins’ lap at 13 after a video of him smoking marijuana appeared on social media. And the decision was controversial. Some people thought that the Ravens made the safe move, others thought that the Ravens were being too conservative and that they missed out on the better tackle.

But right now, the Ravens are winning the debate. The Ravens’ first depth chart came out yesterday on the team’s official website and it has Ronnie Stanley listed as the starter at left tackle, a job that he is unlikely to lose. On the same day, the Miami Dolphins released their first depth chart on their official team site and Laremy Tunsil is listed as the second string left guard.

Now while it’s fairly likely that Laremy Tunsil will win the starting left guard job in Miami before the preseason ends, but Tunsil will be starting at left guard while Ronnie Stanley will be the Ravens’ left tackle. When the Ravens are trying to keep Joe Flacco safe as they make their comeback bid in 2016, they need the offensive lineman they took with the sixth overall pick to win the left tackle job immediately.

And that’s what Ronnie Stanley did. He impressed the Ravens enough in OTA’s and minicamps to get them to part ways with Eugene Monroe in June and Stanley continues to impress at left tackle in training camp. The story of Ronnie Stanley vs. Laremy Tunsil has just begun, but Stanley has started off stronger.
