NHL roundup: Carle signs with Lightning

Free-agent defenseman Matt Carle has found new home in Tampa.

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed Carle to a six-year deal Wednesday, general manager Steve Yzerman announced via the team's Twitter account. Multiple reports said Carle will earn an average of $5.5 million a season, for a total of $33.5 million.

Carle returns to the Lightning, who dealt him to the Philadelphia Flyers early in the 2008-09 season.

"I'm excited to be back. It was a hard decision. The organization is going in the right direction, and I'm happy to be a part of it," Carle said via the Lightning's Twitter account.

Carle, 27, has 32 goals and 170 assists for 202 points in 471 regular-season games with the San Jose Sharks, Lightning and Flyers, as well as five goals and 30 assists for 35 points in 84 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

---Center Mathieu Perreault signed a two-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals worth $2.1 million, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

Perrault, 24, earned a place on the Capitals roster out of training camp last season and had 16 goals and 14 assists in 64 regular-season games this past season. However, he was not in uniform for most of the postseason.

He said he's been told he will play a more prominent role this coming season.

---The Philadelphia Flyers signed two free-agent players on Thursday -- forward Ruslan Fedotenko and defenseman Bruno Gervais.

According to ESPN, Gervais' contract is for two years at $825,000 per season, and Fedotenko signed a one-year contract worth $1.75 million.

Fedotenko, 33, had nine goals and 11 assists in 73 regular-season games with the New York Rangerslast season. He added two goals and five assists in 20 playoff games.

Gervais, 27, had six goals and seven assists in 50 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season

---Restricted free-agent center Mikael Backlund has re-signed with the Calgary Flames, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $725,000, the Calgary Herald reported Thursday.

Backlund had four goals, seven assists and 16 penalty minutes in 41 games.

---The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday named Tom Renney as an associate coach.

Renney, 57, signed a three-year contract. He formerly coached the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks, and was not rehired by the POilers after this past season.

He joins Mike Babcock's staff as a replacement for assistant coach Jeff Blashill.

---Free agent Krys Barch, a physical right wing, agreed to a two-year deal with the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, the Bergen (N.J.) Record reported.

Financial terms of the deal were not available. Last season, Barch, 31, carried a cap hit of $837,500.

Barch had two goals, three assists and 114 penalty minutes in 51 games last season.
