(Adds late games) Nov 7 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's National Hockey League games. - - - Hurricanes 1, Islanders 0 Right wing Radek Dvorak scored in the first period and goalie Justin Peters made the goal stand up as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 1-0 at PNC Arena. It was the first shutout of the season for the Hurricanes. Peters made 21 saves for his third career shutout. Both teams now have 6-7-3 records. - - - Devils 3, Flyers 0 Center Adam Henrique and right-wingers Cam Janssen and Jaromir Jagr scored goals, goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped 22 shots and the New Jersey Devils beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0. After being shut out in consecutive games, the Devils needed just 1:57 to snap their scoreless drought and move to 4-7-4. The Flyers dropped to 4-10-1. - - - Rangers 4, Blue Jackets 2 Left for dead after a horrible start to the season, the New York Rangers are now very much alive after Carl Hagelin scored two goals and captain Ryan Callahan and Ryan McDonagh each had a goal and an assist, leading the Rangers to a 4-2 win over struggling Columbus. Less than 24 hours after routing Pittsburgh at home, the Rangers won their third straight road game and the fifth of six overall to be 8-8-0. The Blue Jackets (5-10-0) got goals from defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Ryan Murray while losing their fifth straight game. - - - Bruins 4, Panthers 1 Goaltender Tuukka Rask came within 5:35 of his second shutout of the season and the Boston Bruins defeated the Florida Panthers 4-1. Center David Krejci, left winger Brad Marchand, defenseman Torey Krug and right winger Reilly Smith scored for the Bruins (9-5-1), who scored three times in the third period and won for only the second time in their last six games. The Panthers (3-9-4) lost their seventh straight. - - - Senators 4, Canadiens 1 Senators backup goalie Robin Lehner won his second game in a row, stopping 33 shots as Ottawa defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1. The win pulled the Senators (6-6-4) to within one point of the Canadiens (8-8-1) in the Atlantic Division standings with the teams running sixth and fifth respectively. - - - Capitals 3, Wild 2 (SO) With both teams riding a three-game winning streak it took more than 65 minutes and a shootout to decide it, but the Washington Capitals skated away with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Center Nicklas Backstrom snapped a wrist shot past past Wild goaltender Josh Harding for the only goal of the shootout. Capitals (9-7-0) goaltender Braden Holtby stopped 33 of 35 shots, along with all three Minnesota (9-4-4) shooters in the shootout, to post his seventh win of the season and extend the Caps' winning streak to four games. - - - Lightning 4, Oilers 2 Goalie Ben Bishop had 38 saves to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. With the victory, Tampa Bay (11-4) continues its franchise-record pace as we near the end of the first quarter of the season. Center Steven Stamkos scored twice for the Lightning leaving the Oilers at (4-11-2). - - - Stars 4, Red Wings 3 (OT) Center Rich Peverley's goal with 18 seconds left in overtime gave the Dallas Stars a 4-3 comeback win over the Detroit Red Wings. Centers Shawn Horcoff, Jamie Benn and Cody Eakin also scored for Dallas (8-6-2). Kari Lehtonen stopped 26 shots. Right winger Todd Bertuzzi had a goal and an assist, center Pavel Datsyuk added a goal and an assist and defenseman Adam Almquist got his first career goal for Detroit (9-6-2), which lost its fourth straight at home. - - - Blues 3, Flames 2 Alexander Steen's second-period goal, his 14th of the season, proved to be the winner as the St. Louis Blues built a 3-0 lead and hung on for a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Steen has a point in his last nine games, a career high, scoring 10 goals and adding two assists during that span. St. Louis (10-2-2) goalie Brian Elliott, starting only his third game this season, posted the 100th win of his NHL career despite allowing two third-period goals by the Flames' (6-8-2) Tim Jackman and Mike Cammalleri. - - - Kings 2, Sabres 0 Center Mike Richards had a goal and an assist and goaltender Jonathan Quick recorded his first shutout of the season with a 19-save performance as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-0. The victory was the fourth in the last six games for the Kings (10-6-0), while Buffalo (3-14-1) failed in its bid for consecutive wins, something it has yet to accomplish this season. - - - Canucks 4, Sharks 2 Receiving goals from four skaters, the Vancouver Canucks ended a nine-game head-to-head losing streak against the San Jose Sharks with a 4-2 win. In handing the hosts their first regulation loss on home ice in nine attempts, the Canucks beat the Sharks for the first time since January 21, 2012.
