Report: RGIII to be kept out of preseason games

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is unlikely to play in the preseason, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

That means Griffin, working diligently to return from January knee surgery, likely won't be on the field until the Redskins' season opener Sept. 9 vs. Philadelphia.

Griffin announced via Twitter at 11 a.m. ET: "Doctors cleared me to practice. Coach is going to ease me in. Thank you for your support & See you in Richmond." Washington coach Mike Shanahan then put Griffin through an extensive workout to determine his readiness to participate in camp Monday. According to the ESPN report a day later, one Redskins front-office member said Washington will not want to subject Griffin to any hits this summer.

---Jacksonville Jaguars' running back Maurice Jones-Drew will ease back into football activity as training camp begins after receiving medical clearance from team doctors.

Coach Gus Bradley said Jones-Drew was cleared to return from foot surgery performed in December, but his on-field regimen is expected to begin slowly.

Wide receiver Justin Blackmon, however, is likely at least one week away from being removed from the active/physically unable to perform list. Blackmon had groin surgery in the offseason and knew he'd be limited into August.

---The Cleveland Browns agreed to a five-year deal with offensive lineman John Greco and signed free agent wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt.

Greco is a sixth-year veteran who is now signed through the 2017 season. The 6-foot-4, 325-pounder appeared in 14 games, including 10 starts, at left guard for the Browns last season.

Roosevelt is a 6-foot, 200-pounder in his third NFL season who has appeared in 16 career games, all with the Buffalo Bills. He was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Bills in 2010 out of the University of Buffalo, and has 25 career receptions for 396 yards with one touchdown.

---Defensive end Mark Anderson was released by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, one season into the four-year deal he signed as a free agent last March.

Anderson signed a contract worth $20 million to be the bookend pass rusher opposite $100 million free agent Mario Williams, the Bills' headline acquisition in 2012.

Anderson, 30, missed 11 games due to injury and had only one sack and 10 total tackles compared to the 10.5 sacks Williams recorded.

---Peyton Hillis is headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing a one-year contract at the veteran minimum, NFL.com reported Tuesday.

Hillis visited the Bucs on Tuesday and wasted no time deciding to join the team. Tampa Bay is looking for a backup behind starting running back Doug Martin after LaGarrette Blount was traded to the New England Patriots during the NFL Draft in April.

Hillis, 27, rushed for 309 yards on 85 carries and one touchdown last season for the Kansas City Chiefs. The past two seasons, Hillis has not come close to the 1,177 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns he had for the Cleveland Browns in 2010.

---Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer will have minor surgery on his left knee later this week, reports say.

An MRI confirmed a bone bruise after Spencer aggravated the knee during the team's conditioning test Saturday. He began Sunday's practice but was unable to finish. He is expected to be out for at least three weeks but should return in time for the season opener against the New York Giants.

---The New York Jets reportedly have signed kicker Billy Cundiff to compete with incumbent Nick Folk.

Cundiff, 33, is a former Pro Bowl performer who has had a solid, well-traveled NFL career. He perhaps is best known for missing what would have been a game-tying 32-yard field goal for the Baltimore Ravens in the closing seconds of the AFC Championship Game against New England in 2012.

To make room for Cundiff, the Jets waived kicker Brett Maher, a first-year free agent.

---Quarterback Tyler Wilson signed with the Oakland Raiders. Terms for the fourth-round pick out of Arkansas were not disclosed.

Wilson, 6-feet-2 and 215 pounds, set an Arkansas record by passing for 7,765 yards while starting 24 of 37 career games. He also threw 52 touchdown passes.

---Running back Ahmad Bradshaw was placed on the physically unable to perform list and rookie safety John Boyett on the non-football injury list to open the Indianapolis Colts' training camp.

Bradshaw, who was signed last month after six seasons with the New York Giants, continues to recover from the latest procedure on his oft-injured foot. He was unable to perform in last month's minnicamp, and no timetable has been set for his return to the field, although Bradshaw is expected to compete for the starting job in the backfield.

Boyett was a sixth-round pick out of Oregon.

---The Denver Broncos released Joe Mays, an NFL.com report said Tuesday.

Mays was a surprise starter at middle linebacker for the Broncos in 2011, and he was given a contract extension after that season. A broken ankle and leg midway through last season cost him his starting job. According to the report, Nate Irving is expected to start at middle linebacker and Steven Johnson should compete for the role.

---Wide receiver Donald Jones is drawing interest from the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts.

Jones is scheduled to meet with the Titans on Tuesday and visit Indianapolis on Wednesday.

He was waived by the New England Patriots last week. Jones had signed a three-year contract with the Patriots in March, but none of the money was guaranteed.
