How do you know when you are in an extremely bad situation? When your a former draft pick, one of only four wide receivers on your team entering the week, and still having talks of benching circulate about you. That appears to be Nelson Agholor’s life right now, especially with the Philadelphia Eagles’ likely to bench the receiver.

Undrafted wide receiver and former practice squad player Paul Turner has already been promoted to the active roster this week while Bryce Triggs has been inching up on a starting spot for weeks now. While neither are game-changing players, their spots in the team have been a threat to Agholor for the entirety of this season.

On almost any other NFL team, Agholor would have been benched or made into a fourth string receiver. He can’t catch the football, his route running has been okay, and he get’s overpowered by almost every defensive back that comes near him. Though not entirely his fault, the play of the offense has definitely regressed without a wide-out capable of making big plays.

Rumors of Agholor seeing less playing time have been circulating for weeks, however, it was not till yesterday’s press conference that we found out head coach Doug Pederson also had concerns about the receiver. In fact, Pederson went as far to hint that Agholor could see some time on the bench in the coming weeks.

“Sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward,” Pederson said. “That way you can begin to clear your head.”

Undoubtedly, his issues in the receiving game have been bothering the player himself. Also speaking to media following the Eagles’ game at Seattle, Agholor revealed that his current issues were basically causing him to try too hard.

“I did it to myself. I started getting in my own head and just trying so hard to think about being perfect, and when miscues were there and they were exposed, I just let it eat at me.”

Quite simply, Nelson Agholor is playing for his NFL life right now. Unless we see some major improvement in the coming weeks, it does not make sense for a team to keep such a player on their roster. While the Eagles’ are already short at the receiver position, their are plenty of fish in the sea if you know what I’m saying.
