Morrison returns to Marlins; Coghlan to DL

The SportsXchange

The Miami Marlins activated first baseman Logan Morrison from the 60-day disabled list and placed Chris Coghlan on the 15-day DL in moves announced Sunday.

Morrison is coming back from surgery in September to repair a torn patellar tendon suffered July 28 in his right knee and spent the first two months of this season in rehab. He was in the starting lineup on Sunday at first base for the Marlins' game against the New York Mets.

The 25-year-old Morrison, who has a career batting average of .250 in the majors, finished a rehab assignment on Saturday night with Double-A Jacksonville. He played in 16 minor-league games, including 10 with Jacksonville, and hit .179 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 56 at-bats.

Morrison's return came one day earlier than planned. He was scheduled to make his first appearance on Monday in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers in Miami.

Coghlan has a nerve irritation in his right calf. He started in center field on Saturday and played eight innings in the Marlins' 2-1, 20-inning victory over the Mets before he was removed from the game.

The 2009 National League Rookie of the Year, Coghlan is batting .277 this season and .338 since May 1.
