MLB roundup: Cardinals' Craig has foot sprain

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig has a sprained left foot, the team announced Thursday.

Craig injured the foot while rounding first base during Wednesday's 16-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds. He was slow to get up and limped off the field. The team feared he might have fractured the foot, which would have kept him out for the rest of the season.

X-rays were inconclusive so he was sent from Cincinnati to St. Louis for an MRI and more X-rays, which revealed the injury.

It is not clear how long Craig will be out, but manager Mike Matheny said he will be able to return at some point this season.

Craig is batting .315 with 13 home runs and 97 RBI.

---The Cincinnati Reds activated right-hander Tony Cingrani from the disabled list to start Thursday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cingrani was out with a strained lower back.

In 16 starts, the rookie is 6-3 with a 2.76 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and has 112 strikeouts over 97 2/3 innings.

---The Baltimore Orioles activated right-handed pitcher Jason Hammel from the disabled list and recalled right-hander Steve Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk.

Hammel, 31, was out since late July with a forearm injury. He is 7-8 with a 5.20 ERA and 1.51 WHIP this season. He might rejoin the rotation eventually but is expected to work out of the bullpen initially.

Johnson, 26, had a 7.82 ERA in 12 2/3 innings in a previous stint with Baltimore earlier this season.
