MLB Roundup: Braves' Heyward sent to hospital after hit by pitch
Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward was hit on the right jaw by a pitch during Wednesday afternoon's game against the New York Mets and was taken to a hospital for tests.
Heyward was batting in the sixth inning when a 90 mph pitch from Mets left-hander Jonathan Niese came up and in and appeared to strike him below the ear flap on his helmet. He took a step and fell to the dirt at home plate.
After remaining down for several minutes, Heyward was helped up and he left the field slowly. Mets doctors examined him at Citi Field before sending him for further evaluation.
The pitch appeared to be unintentional. Niese showed his concern and made a gesture toward Heyward as he was leaving the field.
---Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera apparently suffered a lower-body injury during the ninth inning of Tuesday night's game against the Minnesota Twins while swinging at a pitch.
The exact injury wasn't specified after the game and it was unclear whether Cabrera might miss any games. Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated that it could be a lower abdomen or groin issue. Cabrera also has been bothered by a sore hip this season.
The abdominal strain has bothered Cabrera since July 22. He missed four games in early August.
The third baseman is known for his durability, having never been on the disabled list in his 11-year career in the major leagues.
Despite the injuries this year, Cabrera is batting an American League-leading .359 with 40 home runs and a league-high 120 RBIs in 117 games. The 30-year-old is in the running for his second straight Triple Crown, trailing Baltimore's Chris Davis for the home-run lead. Davis has 45.
---The Philadelphia Phillies signed former Washington Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina to a contract.
Bernadina, 29, was released Monday by the Nationals after hitting .178 with two home runs and six RBIs in 85 games and 29 starts.
He could see time with the Phillies in center field, which has been a trouble spot since Ben Revere suffered a broken ankle. John Mayberry Jr., Casper Wells and Michael Martinez have lacked consistency at the position. Martinez was sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday to make room for Bernadina.
The Washington Post reported that 12 teams expressed interest in Bernadina, but he picked the Phillies because of his familiarity with the team and his .309 career average in Citizens Bank Park,
