One of the nation’s most productive quarterbacks will miss the remainder of the season.

Middle Tennessee State’s Brent Stockstill suffered a broken right collarbone in the team’s 45-25 loss to Texas-San Antonio on Saturday. Coach Rick Stockstill — his dad — said Brent tried to return to the game after suffering the injury.

“He asked the doctors if he could go back in and play,” Rick Stockstill said Monday via the Daily News Journal. “The doctors said no and that it could kill him.”

“Brent asked if anyone had ever played with a [broken collarbone] and the doctors said no. Brent asked if he could be the first. I think that just shows the toughness and competitiveness he has for this team.”

Brent Stockstill finishes the season 232-363 passing for 2,801 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. His injury opens the door for John Urzua to be the team’s starter the rest of the season. Urzua is 24-44 for 267 yards passing with two touchdowns and four picks.

Stockstill won the starting job before the 2015 season and threw for 4,005 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season as a freshman. Before he had to leave the UTSA game, Stockstill had thrown for at least 278 yards in each of MTSU’s games in 2016.

The loss to UTSA dropped MTSU to 6-3. The Blue Raiders have Marshall, Charlotte and Florida Atlantic still on the schedule, so 9-3 isn’t out of the question.
