Michael Sam's father says he was 'terribly misquoted'

The father of Missouri defensive end and NFL draft prospect Michael Sam told the Galveston Daily News he was "terribly misquoted" by The New York Times when asked for his reaction about Sam's revelation that he's gay.

Sam is set to become the first openly gay NFL player.

The Times quoted Sam's father as saying he's "old school" and that the possibility of a gay NFL player bothers him.

Later, though, Michael Sam Sr. said he didn't say that to the Times or say he was a "man and a woman type of guy" and didn't say he didn't want his grandchildren "raised in that kind of environment."

"I did not say anything about my grandkids," Sam Sr. told the Galveston paper.

"I told them Deacon Jones is going to roll over in his grave because here comes my son and that he's going to be a star in the NFL," Sam Sr. told the Galveston Daily News.

The Times has defended its reporting, saying it quoted Sam Sr. "accurately and fairly."
