The worst fears of NHL fans about the World Cup of Hockey bubbled to the surface for Chicago Blackhawks faithful on Thursday night, when news hit that star winger Marian Hossa was getting X-rays after Team Europe’s humbling 4-0 loss to Team North America in an exhibition game.

And by “worst fears” we of course mean “key player gets injured in a meaningless game for an exhibition tournament.”

But according to insider Scott Powers at The Athletic, the 37-year-old winger will play in the World Cup despite being unable to finish Thursday’s game with a bruised right foot:

Hossa suffered the injury when his right foot was struck by a puck in the second period on Thursday. He did not play in the third period. He had the foot examined at a nearby hospital and later in the evening rejoined Team Europe.

Hossa could miss future World Cup exhibition games to be cautious, but he is expected to play once the tournament begins in Toronto next week, the source said.

Would the hockey suffer if we just bubble-wrapped all of these guys for a few weeks?
