Manuel and Cook Set to Battle for Raiders Backup QB

When Raiders passer Derek Carr broke his leg in Week 16, fans hoped Matt McGloin would rally the troops. Yet, things went from bad to worse when even he suffered an injury. Who did the important task fall to? Connor Cook, Oakland’s 4th round pick in 2016. Most experts did not guess on McKenzie drafting young signalcaller, but he did. Although the Raiders drafted him he sat third on the depth chart. Why? Because Matt McGloin won the backup role by default.

So how did Connor Cook fare, given his lack of first-team reps? Initially, he showed glimpses of promise but ultimately showed his lack of maturity and ability to compete at a playoff NFL level. However, he does have time on his side and a high ceiling of potential. When the team drafted him, I firmly believe it’s a value pick hoping to trade him one day. Teams like the Jaguars, Texans, and Cardinals leap to mind.

In addition to the two players named above in the off season this year we added another QB in the shape of EJ Manuel. The former Bills QB signed as a free agent from the after his contract expired. While his play disappointed, he does have experience in his favor. Under those circumstances, that explains why Reggie and Del Rio felt the need to bring him. Meanwhile, his stats aren’t that impressive. Many of those numbers evolved from playing in a basic passing offense.

Furthermore, the question is who will get the nod as backup remains up in the air. There’s different factors that will determine the outcome for instance the value of Connor Cook to trade him if he isn’t even number two. Not to mention, what is best for the team overall. As a matter of fact, Oakland built a competitive roster to challenge for the Super Bowl in years to come making players battle for their spot. In the light of last season’s bad fortune, hope for a fully fit Derek Carr in the playoffs. Now, Cook’s tenure gives him the slight edge.
