Louis Murphy caps eventful Fourth of July weekend for Buccaneers

So … the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ front office and coaching staff have had an interesting start to the month.

On Thursday, undrafted rookie offensive lineman Dominique Robertson was shot and detained by police in California, though it was unclear what happened.

Then early on Saturday, a far more humorous situation: veteran receiver Louis Murphy woke up to find he’d been locked inside a Palm Beach, Fla. museum.

Murphy was at the Flagler Museum attending the wedding of former University of Florida teammate Deonte Thompson, who is a Baltimore Raven, and apparently had himself a good time because, according to a report by the Palm Beach Police, at one point Murphy, who had been drinking, went to the museum courtyard and fell asleep on the stairs.

Murphy told police he “got nervous” when he awoke to find the wedding over and that he was locked inside an empty museum; he broke the glass on a door in order to unlock it and then called a friend, who called 911.

Police and then the museum’s facility manager arrived at 1:12 a.m.; the cost of the window was estimated at $1,000, but Murphy and the museum will “work out the repair costs among themselves,” according to the police report.

Murphy was not charged with a crime.

“This was really just a series of small unfortunate circumstances,” Murphy said Wednesday in a statement. “With no one around, my only option was to break a small glass pane of the door in order to access a phone and call for help. I dialed the police and explained that I needed assistance. It’s unfortunate that I needed to break the glass, but the police officers on the scene and museum staff acknowledged that I didn’t have many other options. I’m working with the museum to ensure everything is properly handled.”
