Lakers pick up option on Bynum's contract for 2012-2013 season

As expected, the Los Angeles Lakers have picked up the $16.1 million option on Andrew Bynum's contract for the 2012-2013 season.

The move, which was basically a formality, will cover the final year on his current contract, which Bynum signed in 2008.

The Lakers had until June 30 to exercise their option on Bynum, but club officials had said after the season they would exercise the option so Bynum would remain with the team for at least one more season.

In 60 games this season, Bynum, 24, averaged career-highs in points (18.7) and rebounds (11.8). He was a starter in the All-Star Game, and was named to the All-NBA second team following the season.
