July Outfielder Rankings

Matthew Pouliot looks at more than 30 trade candidates and who could take their spots in this week's Strike Zone

Welcome to the July outfielder rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll soon find a fully updated top 300 list.

Outfielder Rankings

Dropping off: Angel Pagan (No. 39), Chris Coghlan (No. 100), A.J. Pollock (No. 103), Brennan Boesch (No. 107), Jackie Bradley Jr. (No. 119), Craig Gentry (No. 121), Anthony Gose (No. 124), Oscar Taveras (No. 126), Jimmy Paredes (No. 127), Rick Ankiel (No. 129)

  • The top two was easy, but the third spot in the outfield rankings was up for grabs with Braun out. I decided to go with Upton, despite his two-month slump, since I still think he has the most upside of the rest of the outfielders. McCutchen has, predictably, slowed down as a basestealer and still isn't excelling offensively. Adam Jones may have been the safest choice in that spot, but I don't think he has as much upside as Upton. Ellsbury is running mad, but he's a three-category player these days. Harper's knee is a concern. Bautista and Cespedes aren't hitting for average right now.

  • I'll give Domonic Brown some credit: despite a mid-month slump, he ended up finishing June at .278-6-21 and he even stole five bases. He has eight stolen bases in his last 40 games after collecting five in his previous 189 games as a major leaguer.

  • Puig comes in at No. 33. Some will say it's too low, I'm sure. Maybe most will say it. It's hard to argue with 44 hits in 101 at-bats, seven of them home runs. There are holes to be exposed, though. Regardless, he wouldn't seem to be at much risk of losing playing time to Crawford in the short term, and that's more bad news for Ethier. The hope is that Crawford (hamstring) will come off the DL on Friday.

  • Given Francoeur's habit of catching fire for his new teams, I considered moving him up this month. Then again, there's no guarantee that anyone is going to want him after the Royals eventually complete the process the releasing him.
