Josh McCown wanted tall wideouts in Tampa Bay
When Josh McCown filed in for Jay Cutler with the Bears last season, he had the luxury of working with wideouts Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, both big targets that can overpower opposing defensive backs.
With McCown now in Tampa Bay, he wants that same feel on offense. Therefore, he asked Bucs coach Lovie Smith to go after some big targets in the draft if they want to add to their receiving corps. That's what Tampa Bay did, bringing in receiver Mike Evans (6-5) and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (6-5).
“Josh has been in that situation and to say that he has been in our ear quite a bit is an understatement,'' Smith said, via The Tampa Tribune. “And having seen that work, that was attractive to us.''
Big targets like that can make it easy on any quarterback, especiall for someone in the situation McCown was in. He was practically done with his career before the Bears came calling, taking a job as a high school football coach.
McCown told the newspaper that even though Evans still needs to learn the offense, he can already sense the similarities in the type of targets he'll have to work with in Tampa Bay.
“It's very similar (to what I had in Chicago), at least on paper," McCown said. "There's still a lot of work to do. We have to get out there and (Evans) has to learn the offense and we have to start building together, but it was good.''
McCown thrived as a backup in Chicago, throwing for 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and just one interception in eight games. He'll get the chance to be a sure-fire NFL starter this preseason for the first time in his career.
