Jared Goff moves up depth chart, will be Rams backup quarterback vs. Seattle

As the Los Angeles Rams opened their season with a 28-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football, the player they selected as the No. 1 pick in the draft wasn’t even in uniform.

Jared Goff was a Bay Area standout, both in high school, at Marin Catholic, and college, at nearby Cal. But he was the Rams’ third quarterback as his new team played in his old home, a spectator for the shutout defeat that saw Los Angeles total just 185 offensive yards.

But Goff has moved up the depth chart one spot, and will be in uniform as the Rams play another primetime game this week, this time hosting the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.

Coach Jeff Fisher told reporters on Friday that Goff will be the backup to starter Case Keenum. Sean Mannion was the Rams’ backup against San Francisco.

Despite Keenum’s performance against the 49ers – he completed fewer than half of his passes (17-for-35) and was intercepted twice – over the course of the offseason and training camp, the veteran has outperformed the rookie in practice, which gives a hint as to how far away Goff still may be from taking over the starting role.

Fisher told NFL Network’s Steve Wyche last week, “Goff will be the starter, but not until he is ready.
