'Iron Lady' Katinka Hosszu wins 200 IM for third Olympic gold

RIO DE JANEIRO – The Iron Lady was golden again Tuesday night, and now only one race stands between Katinka Hosszu and an Olympic record.
Hosszu, the Hungarian swimmer nicknamed for her ability to swim a staggering number of events without tiring, won her third gold medal of the Rio Games, overwhelming the field in the 200-meter individual medley to set an Olympic record at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
American Maya DiRado, who finished second to Hosszu in the 400-meter IM, came away with a bronze medal.
Like American star Katie Ledecky, Hosszu came into the Games hoping to break the female record of four Olympic golds in a single Games, held by American swimmers Missy Franklin and Amy Van Dyken. While Ledecky settled for silver in a relay race, Hosszu dropped the 200-meter butterfly Tuesday, focusing instead on her specialty, the IM.
Hosszu’s grip on the race was tenuous coming in, as Brit Siobhan-Marie O’Connor posted the fastest qualifying time, but the Iron Lady held her off down the stretch with a finish of 2:06:58, three-tenths of a second ahead of O’Connor. DiRado finished third with a time of 2:08:79.
