Indians release OF Francoeur

The Cleveland Indians released veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur on Saturday.

Cleveland signed Francoeur to a minor league free-agent contract in January with a major league training camp invite.

Francoeur, 30, batted .286 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 35 bat-bats this spring.

The Indians decided to keep the more versatile infielder/outfielder Elliot Johnson over Francoeur.

Last year, Francoeur batted .208 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 59 games with the Kansas City Royals. After his release in July, he batted .194 with no homers and four RBIs in 22 games with the San Francisco Giants.
