Heisman Watch: Lamar Jackson's last chance to seal the deal

Heisman voting opened this week and while most people probably had a good idea of whom they were voting for heading into the final round of regular season contests, there are probably a good chunk of voters taking a wait-and-see approach, especially with frontrunner Lamar Jackson, who has struggled in his past two contests. If he falters against Kentucky, which is a big if, the door would be wide open for an opportunistic player to take his spot.

Here’s this week’s Heisman Watch as we head into Week 13:

Despite a rough game against Houston last week, the Heisman is still Jackson’s award to lose. But he’ll have to have a strong performance against Kentucky to get there. Against the Cougars last week, Jackson completed 46.5 percent of his passes and tallied just 255 total yards of offense. His offensive line really let him down during the game as it allowed 11 sacks. He’s had two subpar games in a row and can’t afford a third.

Oklahoma predominantly used its ground game in the snowy win against West Virginia, but Westbrook still shined when he got the ball. He had two catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in the contest, which is his seventh triple-digit-yardage game in the past eight contests. He’s also scored at least one touchdown in every game during the Sooners’ eight-game winning streak.

Baker Mayfield leads the nation in quarterback rating (91.2) and while he’s been a little under the radar, he’s been the catalyst that’s helped the Sooners to an eight-game winning streak and has them on the cusp of another Big 12 title. Similar to Westbrook, Mayfield didn’t have to do much against West Virginia, but he still completed 9 of 15 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed for two scores in the win.

Deshaun Watson has had his ups and downs this season, but he did get his team into the ACC title game again and did so by completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 202 yards and a touchdown in a win against Wake Forest. He also added 47 yards and two scores in the effort. He leads the ACC in passing yards (3,279) and is tied for first in passing touchdowns (28).

D’Onta Foreman had 250 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to Kansas — a loss that is still reverberating in the Austin community — but he also had two costly fumbles that contributed to the defeat. Foreman has rushed for at least 100 yards in every contest this season and has had three games of 250 or more yards. He also now leads the nation in rushing with 1,863 yards.
