Happy Anniversary: Willie Mays' 600th career home run

On Sept. 22, 1969 -- or exactly 45 years ago -- MLB legend Willie Mays became just the second man to join the 600-homer club. After the following shot, it was just Mays and Babe Ruth:

Mays would end up with 660 career homers. He'd soon be joined in the 600-plus home run crowd by Hank Aaron. The trio of legendary sluggers would remain as the only three hitters with at least 600 home runs for a while, but a recent deluge has seen Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr., Jim Thome and Sammy Sosa top 600.

Mays still sits at fourth all-time behind Bonds, Aaron and Ruth, though Rodriguez is only six back. Should A-Rod play next season, it seems likely he'll pass the Say Hey Kid.

Regardless, happy anniversary to the esteemed Mr. Mays.
